The Palace of Fine Arts in Brussels exhibits coming winter hundred fifty paintings and engravings and drawings by Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553).

After Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) Lucas Cranach the Elder was one of the most important representatives of German painting in the sixteenth century. He is one of the most popular artists of the Northern Renaissance.

Lucas Cranach the Elder was born in October 1472 in Kronach, a place in the Land of Bavaria who today as the birthplace of the famous painter annually attracts many tourists. The painter also named to his hometown who was still Cranach was called.


Early sixteenth century, the painter moved to Vienna.
He was three years in that city stays and made several of his more famous works. In Vienna he painted include various biblical scenes, sacred scenes and portraits.



Based on work by Albrecht Altdorfer (1480-1538) and Jörg Breu the Elder (1475-1537) during the exhibition in Brussels examines the impact that Cranach was the so-called Danube School, a name for an art movement in Austria and South Germany - concentrating around the Danube valley - which particularly flourished under the reign of Emperor Maximilian I (1493-1519). The flow was characterized among other things by what fairytale views of local landscapes containing lifelike human figures.

Another part of the exhibition is devoted to the Brussels until 1505. Cranach was in that year appointed court painter to the Elector of Saxony: Frederick the Wise (1463-1525). The painter settled in Wittenberg and competed at that time with the artists Hans Burgkmair (1473-1531) and Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). During his first years in Wittenberg Cranach few woodcuts in terms of technique and theme by connoisseurs seen as downright spectacular works.

 Wittenberg Cranach also came into contact with art from the Netherlands and Italy. The exhibition devotes attention to work by showing artists like Quentin Massijs, Bernard van Orley and Francesco di Francia

Cranach's famous painting of the 'virtuous Lucretia' is a stepping stone to a lower part of the exhibition dedicated to the nudes of the artist. The reference of this work consists of works by artists such as Jacopo de'Barbari, Lucas van Leyden and Albrecht Dürer. In the popular erotic nudes of Cranach and didactic elements were linked.

In the last part of the exhibition in Brussels is the central Reformation. Wittenberg Martin Luther taught artist also know and became good friends with him. The Reformation was actually Cranach 'all-rounder'. He served both confessional and painted works just as well portraits of Martin Luther and his followers as his opponents.


 According to the Centre for Fine Arts is the first time that there is a Benelux country is an exhibition devoted to Lucas Cranach the Elder. In total there are about fifty paintings in Brussels to admire. Among which are also the oldest known work on panel Carach: the Crucifixion. It also includes the famous work Martyrdom of Saint Catherine exhibited.

For the exhibition have about fifty private collectors and public institutions one or more works loaned to Palace of Fine Arts. The exhibition entitled "The World of Lucas Cranach 'runs from 20 October 2010 to 23 January 2011.
