
Inspiration
At an early age joined Jaap Oudes, born in Alkmaar, in the artistic footsteps of his father Dirk Oudes, a renowned artist and horlogier. Initially copied Jaap de cubist style of his father. But soon started Jaap and his quest for a personal style. Tentative outline characterize the initial phase of Jaap's quest. In subsequent years, during World War II, was forced Jaap hiding in the basement of his home to escape forced labor. Only lit by a kerosene lamp he spent many hours there, with books, ink and brushes for company. So he read "Pallieter" by the Flemish author Felix Timmermans. A story about unbridled joy and pure love for nature and landscape, with Pallieter as protagonist. In that dark cellar was Jaap Oudes in "Pallieter" the inspiration for his colorful drawings. In Enkhuizen, Hoorn, Medemblik, on Marken, West Graftdijk and The Rime he drew what he observed around him. People, buildings, animals, scenery, costumes, ships, stories. Everyday life in all its colorful diversity was reflected in Oudes "numerous pencil drawings. The many impressions he gained he incorporated preferably in an artwork. This seem to tumble over each other are drawings of enthusiasm and joie de vivre. No piece of paper was kept uncovered. Coming from a wealthy family, it was not necessary to Jaap for a salary to find. He was of the opinion that he, like everyone else, had to work. Therefore Oudes stood every morning at the crack of the day to work on his drawings and sketches. Day in, day out, with thousands of pencil drawings as a result.

drive-in-heerhugowaard enkhuizenMet the story of Pallieter in mind departed Oudes to Flanders. He wanted to feel at one with the environment Pallieter's spiritual father Felix Timmermans. There too he drew with great enthusiasm that what he observed in his immediate surroundings, the people he met and the stories he heard from them. Popular culture and folklore, it is the common thread through his entire oeuvre. Oudes got the hang of it and traveled to France, Spain and Portugal. Folkloric elements such as bullfighting, Don Quixote, parades of giants and the Burgundian French life had a place in his authentic, colorful world. Despite these international trips Oudes his native region remained loyal. Throughout his working life continued West Friesland a favorite subject. More than once he put classical elements in a West Frisian setting: the Holy Family, Joseph, Mary and baby Jesus in a West Frisian chaise example. Oudes' own fresh take on the Biblical story. But also cityscapes of Hoorn, the lock of Schardam, Station Heerhugowaard placed in Enkhuizen and banpaal in Schellinkhout witness Oudes' love for West Friesland.
Retrospective
The fascinating work of Jaap Oudes is from 4 October to 29 November at the special exhibition "The colorful world of Jaap Oudes" in West Frisian Museum. Together with the Foundation and Dirk Jaap Oudes gives the Westfries Museum with this exhibition a fitting tribute to Jaap Oudes: cultural folk artist, observer, but above all a remarkable man with his own colorful drawings are authentic vision of the world imagined.
