cause of blindness

glaucoma
Cataracts Glaucoma is a condition where an increase in pressure in the eyeball untreated until visual field loss (blind spots) and eventually leads to blindness. There is also a form of glaucoma in which the intraocular pressure apparently normal, but to characteristic deterioration of the facial nerve leads, the normal pressure glaucoma.
The disease usually occurs after the fortieth year and is usually insidious, gradually falling parts of the peripheral visual field in which the patient usually goes unnoticed. Central vision remains intact long.

One of the causes of glaucoma is an increased intraocular pressure. This can be caused by a closure of the canal of Schlemm. The tear film can not be removed and accumulates in the eye. The disease may be hereditary.

There is also a form of acute glaucoma, which may occur by the sudden closing of the natural outflow of the eye fluid, which is in the chamber angle, where the iris at the edge nearly abuts against the cornea. It is often triggered by conditions with a wide pupil (often at night, sometimes after the administration of pupil dilating eye drops). This is usually intense pain with redness and tearing of the eye. This can occur spontaneously or as a late complication of some other eye disorders. It is an indication for an emergency appointment with an ophthalmologist.

As a result of the increased pressure in the eye, the nerve fibers of the optic nerve slowly affected. Because especially the peripheral vision fails, that relatively little contribution to the show, falls glaucoma in the initial period hardly on. As the central visual field is compromised, the vision loss noted. Depending on the cause of glaucoma, both eyes are affected, usually there is a difference in the severity of visual field loss between the two eyes.

With age, increases the risk of glaucoma. Also farsighted or myopia, or an abnormality in the blood vessels increase the risk of glaucoma.
